Basic Handling Skills

This is the first step to getting a Class 6 licence. This is an off road training course to make sure you are safe to ride your motorcycle when you get your learners licence. Normally, these courses are held on Sundays at Massey University in Albany. The maximum allocated time for training and assessment is 2 hours.
Basic Handling Skills consists of six exercises which will ensure you can handle the bike. At Roadcraft, we also ensure that you know how to change from 1st to 2nd gear, something that not all training schools will teach during BHS.

The exercises are as follows:

  • Slow riding - you must ride through a lane 0.75 of a metre wide and 18 metres long in not less than 10 seconds.
  • Routine stop - you must ride at a speed of approximately 20km/h and, when given a signal from the examiner, stop so the motorcycle's front wheel comes to a rest within a marked square.
  • Cone weaving (slalom) - you must ride along a slalom course, weaving between the cones placed 3.5 metres apart and offset 0.5 of a metre from a straight line.
  • Quick stop - you must ride at a speed of approximately 20km/h and, on a signal from the examiner, stop as quickly and safely as possible, using both brakes.
  • Riding a curve - you must ride up to a curve from a distance of 25 metres at a speed of 20km/h. You must then give a turn signal, adjust your speed and ride around the curve (which is 2.5 metres wide), keeping within the lines all the way. This manoeuvre will be done from both directions to simulate both left and right curves.
  • Stopping in the curve - you must ride up to a curve from a distance of 25 metres at a speed of 20km/h. You must then adjust your speed, enter the curve and come to a stop within the curve.
  • Posture and general control - you will also be marked on posture and general control of the motorcycle around the test circuit.
